Book Review "Courting Cate"

My latest book review was the book Courting Cate by Leslie Gould. This book was unlike any I've ever read. It was set in modern times in an Amish community. It was the retelling of The Taming of the Shrew and I loved it. I always loved the movie Kiss Me, Kate and I loved reading the Taming of the Shrew so to put the tale into modern times was a fun spin. 

Also, I've never read anything much about the Amish. Living in West, I've never had much exposure to them, so I thought it was really interesting to learn about their lifestyle. 

The story in a nutshell is about two daughters. Their mother died when the second daughter was born and the older of the two, Cate, ends up raising the baby mostly on her own. She had to grow up too fast. Also a key factor in her acting "shrewish" is she had her heart broken by a someone she thought she could trust. Her father wants to see her married and so places the edict that her younger sister can't court and marry unless Cate was courting and getting married. Both sisters see it as highly unfair, but then a man comes into town that just might be the one Cate has been waiting for. Then in an unforeseen fold of events she finds out some information and feels as if her heart is broken again. 

I really enjoyed this book and wouldn't mind reading more like it in the future.

Trouble

Kent has been technically mobile for a quite a while. He has rolled everywhere and scooted backwards. The only problem with that (for him) is that he hasn't been able to get to what he was aiming for. He has gotten into things that he wasn't aiming for plenty but now that he can move forwards he is already getting into more trouble.



Rachel has been sick, so we have been carrying a roll of toilet paper with us to every room we have been in. Well Rachel and I were eating breakfast and we must have left one down because I turned around and saw this:

He is a cute little trouble maker, but yep, I'm in trouble!

Crawling, Well kinda

We knew it would be soon. He has been trying to do it for weeks and weeks and now he can finally do it. He can move forwards! I was totally hoping he would figure it out before Jacob left, but instead it was 2 days later. Poor Jacob has to miss so many firsts. I feel so lucky that I get to stay at home with my kids and see all of the new things they are doing!


When Jacob had to leave for training when Rachel was a baby he missed her rolling over, crawling, and walking. Thankfully he won't be gone as long this time as he was then!

 

He doesn't really crawl, but then he doesn't really scoot either. He reaches for something and when he finds out he can't reach he gets on his hands and knees, or sometimes his feet and knees, and then plops forward onto the ground. It is really quite entertaining to watch, but don't take my word for it, see for yourself!

Some might call me crazy, but I'm actually quite excited that he is moving forwards now. I know he will be into a lot more things, but I know he will be happier being able to get to things. He is such an active boy, and he just loves to move all the time so I know he will be happier moving in the direction he wants. I love this funny little moving boy! :)

Day 1

Well, it is now the end of day one. We had a few episodes of barf, a few tears, and lots of hugs and kisses. Rachel told me once today, "I want Daddy to come home!" When I told her that he can't, she insisted "He can!"
Even though he's gone, my Jakie is still taking care of me. He bought some Girl Scout cookies before he left and told me about them today. He told me he bought them so we could have something to be happy about today. Isn't he so sweet! I just love that boy!
Something funny that happened with Rachel today: Rachel has been super sick for a few days and hasn't had much of an appetite, so I let her pick what we would have for dinner tonight. Her choice? Green eggs and ham. But not just normal green eggs and ham, she asked for "an other color of green eggs and ham." She wanted "blue green eggs and ham. :) So blue green eggs and ham it was. After dinner she started coughing and couldn't stop and it made her throw up because she was coughing so hard. I felt so bad for her. The funny part was that she was sad about throwing up her green eggs and ham and she wanted to eat more of them right after she had thrown it up.

I feel so sad for my sick little girl! I really hope she gets better soon. It breaks my heart to see her be so sick and miserable.

Over all we had a pretty good day though. Everyone was happy and we got to talk to Jacob on the phone. I would say it was a good first day. Hopefully we can keep our attitudes as happy the rest of the time he is gone.
